FAQs

Do WiFi extenders work for ring camera?

It is possible to use a WiFi extender with a Ring camera. Some users have reported that they have had good results using an extender, while others have said that their experience was not as good. It is important to keep in mind that not all WiFi extenders will work with every Ring camera, so it is best to check the compatibility of your specific model.

One thing to keep in mind when using a WiFi extender with a Ring camera is that the extender may not be able to provide the same level of coverage as the router. If you are experiencing poor signal strength or dropped connections, it may be worth considering upgrading your WiFi extender or purchasing a new router.

What’s the alternative of wifi extender for ring camera?

The Ring Video Doorbell Pro is designed to establish an encrypted connection with your router-connected Mac or Windows PC using hard-wired USB or wirelessly over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). In order for this wireless encryption to work properly, your Ring Doorbell must be in close proximity to your router. If you have a Ring Video Doorbell and are looking for an alternative to WiFi extenders, we recommend checking out our selection of Ring Channels.

How far can ring camera be from router?

Theoretically, this depends on the transmission power of the router. But practically, it is limited by the noise level. The noise figure of GSM devices is typically 7dB (3G/4G), which means that every 3dBm increase in received transmit power will add roughly twice more possible range.

In an outdoor environment, signal propagation goes usually from attenuation in the range of 20 dB, which means that the theoretical maximum distance is 18 times longer than a room with standard walls. In reality, when you add trees and other obstacles in the way, it will be difficult to exceed a 3-4X distance.

In short, if your house is large enough (>200 sqm) and you have several floors, you can easily cover most of your house with a ring camera.

If not, and if the router is far from the desired installation spot, we recommend using an access point (AP) aka WiFi repeater connected to the same network as the router. The  AP will pick up and repeat the signal, and extend the range to where you need it.

How can I be sure that my ring camera is getting enough power?

The camera will work with any 802.11 b/g/n router that has at least 2.4GHz transmission and supports WPA2-PSK security. If you have a dual-band router, make sure that 2.4GHz is turned on to make the best use of your ring camera device.

Do not get frustrated if it does not work immediately. Some routers are initially configured with higher security settings by default, which means that you may need to change them to WPA2-PSK before the signal will be picked up.

In case of doubt, try the following:

  • Connect your router to a computer via Ethernet cable and log into its web interface.
  • Go to Wireless settings, turn off Client Isolation mode (also called wireless isolation) and turn on WMM Support which is also known as QoS or WiFi Multimedia.
  • Save this setting and reboot your router.
